IOH News Service

Kochi October 18 2005: The Kerala High Court today ordered convening of the general body of the Kaniattunirappu St John Jacobite Syrian Church for conducting election to its managing committee in accordance with the 1934 constitution of the Malankara Church.

Justice V Ramkumar directed the Ernakulam first Additional District Court to appoint an Advocate Commissioner to convene the general body.

The court made it clear that parishioners who swear allegiance to the 1934 Constitution of the Malankara Church alone shall be entitled to participate in the election.

The order was issued on a writ petition filed by Church Trustee M V George and 23 parishioners.

The church remained closed since September 03, 2003, following factional dispute between the Orthodox and Jacobite groups.

It rejected the contempt of court case against Vicar Fr John of the Moolamattom Church and Puthencruz Sub Inspector of Police T V. Jacob, finding that the petition was an abuse of the process of court.
