SHARJAH: Daya Bhai, figuratively called as ‘Jhansi Rani of present days’ ,visited the 6th Gulf Youth Conference and 4th Martha Mariam Samjam Conference held at Saint Gregorios Church, Sharjah, at Mar Osthathios Nagar,on October 15, 2013.
The theme of the largely attendeed 3 days’ conference, has been ‘Deification and Renewal in the Holy Spirit’.
Daya Bhai adorning very typical tribal dress and costumes was received enthusiastically by the audience. Dr.Yuhanon Mar Dimitrios welcomed and introduced her.
A Malayali ex Catholic Nun,then called Mercy Mathew,(who hailed from Palai in Kerala,) left Nunhood many years ago to freely do missionary work avioding the frills of Religion and Institutional restrictions, says her true role model is Christ and the only other person who has influenced her very much is Gandhiji. She says she does not do any conversions but the christian spirit is her motivation and drive. She fights like a one woman army against social injustices and denial of human rights to Adivasis and Tribals in Madhya Pradesh. She recalls that she has received many awards but her true awards/rewards were assaults, beatings and abuses that she received in her journey to bring justice to the exploited. She painfully realised that Adivasis were forced to work for Rs.5/= per day.The work was hard and the day was long. She was very emotional when she cited an incident where an Adivasi asked her as to why she came to live and work with them- the “wild Monkeys”.Daya Bhai is 73 years old but still active and agile. She hailed from a rich ancestral Catholic family and is well educated and highly articulative. She owns a horse which she uses for local travelling and a plot of land where she does organic farming and cultivation, both of which she purchased from her family inheritance.
Referring to Kerala she said Kerala may be progressing materially but even as an educated informed population, the state is morally declining and individual freedom and rights of women are not protected. She was given a standing ovation after her dynamic speech that took the audience to sharp realities in life and after a brief Q&A session.
