Nellippathy (Attappady): The newly constructed building of the St. Gregorios English Medium School (CBSE), owned by St. Thomas Ashram, Attappady was inaugurated by K. C. Joseph, Honorable Minister for Rural development and Culture.
In his inaugural speech he said that the Government of Kerala is committed to the welfare and development of tribes and people of Attappady. He appreciated the efforts of the Malankara Orthodox Church and St. Thomas Ashram, Attappady to provide quality education and develop the downtrodden. While several organizations are running English medium schools just for making money, SGEM School is keen in providing quality education at low cost. It is laudable that the school tries to uphold and display great values in life.
Dr. Zachariah Mar Aprem, Metropolitan of Adoor-Kadampanad Diocese presided over the function. In his presidential address he said that even though Attappady is as big as Alappuzha district in Kerala, it is still a part of Mannarkkad Thaluke and it is high time to make Attappady exclusively a Thaluke for focusing to its development. He said that SGEM School is a beacon light for the development of Attappady region.
The school started in 1998 by St. Thomas Ashram, is the only CBSE English Medium School in the Attappady region. It has grown into one of the major schools in the region during the past 15 years. There are 367 students studying in the school from LKG to Grade IX. Among them 54 children are from various tribal hamlets in the region. Their education and boarding expenses are met by the Ashram with the support of well-wishers and friends of the ashram.
The newly constructed building which has a plinth area of 8000 square feet was built in a record period of mere seven months. A Good library with reading room, Computer Lab, Study Halls, Training Hall and other facilities have been provided as per the direction of CBSE, New Delhi. Various subjects are taught by qualified teachers with years of experience. Considering the all-round development of students the school has been providing training in sports and games, elocution, essay writing, general knowledge and has been encouraging students to conduct study trips and to participate in Eco, science and story clubs. Counseling facility is also provided in the school.
In the meeting the newly furbished library was inaugurated by N. Shamsuddeen, MLA, Mannarkkad. Dr. Ipe Varghese, Registrar of Kerala University of Health Sciences delivered the keynote address. Fr. M. D. Yuhanon Ramban, Superior of the Ashram and Manager of the School welcomed the gathering. Dr. Siby Tharakan, Mission Projects Director, E. J. Antony, President Agali Grama Panchayath, K. J. Mathew ward member, Prof. John Mathew, Sabaha Managing Committee Member, George Joseph, principal, PTA President Sunny Joseph and Rakhi Rajan spoke on the occasion.
Before the meeting, students and Parent-teacher association jointly received the Guests of Honor, Dr. Zacharia Mar Aprem and K. C. Joseph.
