Fr. Dr. Baby Varghese joins at Yale ISM Connecticut as fellow

CONNECTICUT: Fr. Dr. Baby Varghese from Malankara Orthodox Church has joined as a fellow for the year 2013-14 at Yale Institute of Sacred Music, Connecticut. He will also serve as a visiting professor in Liturgical Studies for the academic year here.
Fr. Baby Varghese is professor of Syriac studies, liturgy, and sacramental theology at Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam, in Kerala, India. He is also professor of Syriac studies at St. Ephrem’s Ecumenical Research Institute, and a research guide in Syriac studies at Mahatma Gandhi University, both in Kerala.
Fr. B. Varghese holds a Ph.D. in religious studies from the Sorbonne, as well as doctorate of theology from the Catholic University of Paris. His research focuses on the ecclesiology and history of Syriac Christianity, the Syrian Orthodox Church and its two major liturgical traditions, Tur Abdin in South Eastern Turkey and Mosul/Tikrit in Iraq (popularly known as the Western and Eastern traditions, respectively).
Fr.B.Varghese did his Post Doctoral studies in Berlin (Free University) with the prestigious “Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship” (1993-95) during which he made extensive researches on the Syriac liturgical Manuscripts in the British Library, Vatican Library, Paris National Library and the Berlin State Library. In 2004, he was awarded the Burke Fellowship (Scholar-in-Residence) at the Union Theological Seminary, New York). In 012, he made a study tour in Eastern Turkey, during which he stayed at the Kurkma Dayara (Deir al Zafaran) and the Monastery of Mar Augen, near Nisibis (where Augen bava stayed for four years in the beginning of the 20th century).
His publications include West Syrian Liturgical Theology (Ashgate, UK, 2004), which was very well reviewed by Syriac Scholars all over the world..
Recently he has translated several liturgical books from Syriac into English ( published by MOC Publications) which are currently used in the Malankara Orthodox parishes outside Kerala.
During his fellowship year, he will explore the historical development of the Syrian Orthodox liturgy and the processes of enculturation and contextualization that began in the fourth century in both Antioch and Mesopotamia. Of particular interest are the content and style of liturgical texts composed in various cultural milieus and their impact on liturgical music, art, and architecture.
Fellows from around the world to join its community of scholars and practitioners for one year in the Yale Institute of Sacred Music . Scholars, religious leaders, or artists whose work is in or is turning toward the fields of sacred music, liturgical/ritual studies, or religion and the arts are selected for the fellowship here.
