BENGALURU : St George Orthodox Church, Indira Nagar, romped home lifting the Col Jojan Thomas Ashok Chakra Memorial Ever Rolling Tambourines Trophy for the second time with a cash prize of Rs 20,000.
They won the 5th Annual Tambourines competition held on August 31 at St George Knanaya Church, Domlur. St Thomas Orthodox Cathedral, Chennai was the runner-up, followed by St Marys’ Orthodox Valiyapally, Jalahalli, pocketing Rs 5,000.
The competition aims to preserve the ancient tunes of the Syrian Orthodox Church and to hand over the rich legacy to the next generation. A total of 10 teams from various churches from Bengaluru and Chennai took part in the competition.
The panel of judges included Fr Sam Thankachan, Fr Jiju N John, and Beena Jojan Thomas w/o Late Col Jojan Thomas, AC.
Karnataka State Home Minister K J George graced the function as chief guest at the event.
The city’s important inter church choir competition has been named in the memory of Col Jojan Thomas who died valiantly in an encounter with militants in Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir in 2008. He had led the 45 Rashtriya Rifles in the dense forests of Macchal sector, near the Line of Control.
Bengaluru Diocese Metropolitan HG Dr Abraham Mar Seraphim has congratulated the winners of Tambourines 2013.
