DUBAI: Tharayil Cheeramvelil Varghese George from Mulanthuruthy has been chosen as the first recipient of St. Dionyisius Karshika Award instituted by Dubai OCYM unit- informed Secretary John Kutty Idicula,

Varghese George will receive the award from Catholicose Moran Mor Baselius Marthoma Paulose II at an event to be held on November 29, 2012 at the Ulloor Church Centre in Thiruvananthapuram.

In an era of rising prices when Kerala is increasingly depending on other states for most of the agricultural products, Dubai OCYM unit has instituted this award in memory of Saint Vattasseril Mar Dionysius to promote farming.

Varghese George retired as a quality inspection engineer from FACT in 2001. After retirement he chose farming for the past 11 years using traditional methods in a scientific way.

In the 5 acre area around his house, he has built a thriving farm with farm animals, medicinal plants, vegetables and fruits. In 2006 he won the award for the best farmer in the “traditional coconut farming” category at the national level. In 2007, he won the Sheera Mitra award from Milma and in 2008 he was the runnerup for the Karshakasree award given by Malayala Manorama.
