MUSCAT: His Holiness Baselious Marthoma Paulose II, Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan, has said that work on the St Gregorios International Cancer Care Centre (SGICCC) is on schedule and will be completed on time.
The Catholicos allayed fears from several quarters about misuse of funds and assured the faithful that funds obtained for the purpose is being channelized in the right direction. The Catholicos was addressing a special meeting at the Muscat Mar Gregorios Orthodox Maha Edavaka (MGOME) during his three-day visit to the Sultanate of Oman.
HH Baselious Marthoma Paulose II said with bifurcation of each department at SGICCC into 5 wings, each headed by 5 directors, the work was going on smoothly and on schedule. Also, the Metropolitan Council under the direct supervision of 3 Metropolitans reviews the work on a monthly basis.
Earlier, headed by Fr Alexander Koodarathil as CEO, who has since voluntarily given up the post and is now serving as Vicar in a church under Adoor Diocese.
The mega project worth Rs 120 crore, requires over Rs 70 lakh a month towards its construction costs for which the SGICCC is on the lookout towards sourcing more funds to complete the project in time. The Catholicos reiterated that the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church will not hesitate to dispose off some of its real estate properties in order to fund the project (in the case of any emergency) and complete it on time, since its ‘credibility’ is at stake.
“Structure of the building will be completed by 2012 end, finishing works by 2013 and the project in full is expected to start functioning by April 2014. Once the first phase begins, we will be able to generate income from the project,” HH added.
The meeting was also presided over by Pulikkottil Dr Geevarghese Mar Yulios, Metropolitan of Ahmedabad Diocese, Fr Shaji Mukadiyil Baby, Finance Director, SGICCC (Research & Training), Fr Joji George Koickalethu, Fr Binu John Thomas, , parishioners and others.
Fr Shaji Mukadiyil Baby who is presently in Oman for the third time said the response from churches in the Gulf was better and urged more cooperation and help. Fr Shaji and HH the Catholicos will be visiting Sharjah Orthodox Church from November 16.
