The Catholicate of the Malankara orthodox Syrian Church

Written By: on Aug 14th, 2012 and filed under Articles, We Believe, Youth And Faith.

The word ‘Catholicos’ means ‘the general head’ or ‘general bishop’. It can be considered as equivalent to ‘universal Bishop’. This title and rank is much more ancient than the title Patriarch in the church.

In the ministry of the early church there were only three ranks namely; Episcopos (Bishop), Priest and Deacon. By the end of the third century or by the beginning of the fourth century certain bishops of certain important cities or provincial capitals in the Roman empire gained pre- eminence than other bishops and they came to be known as Metropolitans. The Ecumenical councils of the fourth century recognized the authority of these Metropolitans.

By the fifth century the Bishops in major cities like Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch etc. gained control over the churches in the surrounding cities. Gradually they became the heads of each independent regional church and were called Patriarch which means ‘common father’.
The same rank in the Churches outside the Roman Empire was called Catholicos. There were three ancient Catholicates in the Church before the fifth century. They were the Catholicate of the East (Persia), the Catholicate of Armenia and the Catholicate of Georgia. None of these ranks and titles are the monopoly of any church. Any Apostolic and national church has the authority to declare and call its head, Catholicose, Pope, or Patriarch.

Even though the title Catholicose had not existed in India before the 20th century, the idea behind the Catholicate or Patriarchate as the head of a national independent Church was there from the early centuries and there was similar native position or authority in the Indian Church. As we say that St. Peter was the first Pope of Rome, St. Thomas was the first Head or the Catholicos of India. As all other Apostles did, he also established Church in India and made a set up to continue its administration in India. That was the Apostolic authority existed in India throughout the centuries.

In India the position and authority of the catholicose is development in the history of the Church throughout the past centuries.

The first stage of the apostolic ministry in the Malankara Church is from the time of St.Thomas till the middle of the fourth century when the authority of the Church was vested in the hands of the Archdeacon.

The second stage is the period of the reign of the Arcdeacons which started from the middle of the fourth century and lasted till the sixteenth century.

The third stage started when the archdeacon was elevated to the position of a Bishop by the community with the name Marthoma I in 1653. Since then the head of the community was the Marthoma Metrans and later the position was developed to Malankara Metropolitan with more recognition.

When in a religious turmoil the Patriarch of Antioch interfered and suspended the Malankara Metropolitan demanding complete surrender, in 1912 the Church consecrated the senior Metropolitan as the Catholicose and head of the Church. In 1934,through the meeting of the Malankara Association the authority and powers of the Malankara Metropolitan was entrusted to the Catholicose. Thus both the spiritual and temporal authorities of the Church was vested in one person who is the Catholicose cum Malankara Metropolitan and the development of authority in that direction was completed in the Church.

Historical Development of Catholicate in India
Archdeacons

In India St.Thomas founded the church and appointed prelates to continue apostolic ministry in the church. It is believed that the prelates were appointed from for ancient families namely, Pakalomattom, Sankarapuri, Kalli, and Kaliankal. Gradually the Pakalomattom family gained prominence in the ministry and chief prelates of the community where hailed from that family.During the reign of Marthoma VIII, the metropolitan of the community in the early 19th century, the Madras government once asked him a review of the history of the Malankara church and gave him seventeen questions to answer. On the 20th of April 1812 he gave written answer to all the questions. The last question was about the position and authority of the Malankara Metropolitan in the church. In his answer, he said, that from 335 AD for 1308 years ie. Till the coonan cress oath, the church was ruled by the Archdeacons of Pakalomattom family. He also said that after the coming of the Portuguese the church had, besides him six Metrans and one metropolitan. The Metran or Malankara Metropolitan of the community was the continuation of the apostolic authority in the Malankara Church. Our historical evidences say that in the early time, the title of the head of the community was Arch deacon. Sometimes the title was known as the Arch deacon of whole Indian. The native language it was usually called Jathikku Karthavyan. The Arch deacon of the community was the unquestioned social and political leader and he got even local soldiers under his command to protect himself and protect the interest of the community. The Arch deacon was the unquestioned leader of the community when the Portuguese arrived Malabar in the 16th century.

The Portuguese tried to bring the Archdeacon under their control. Through the Synod of Udayamperur (1599) they tried their level best control the Archdeacon and for a short period they brought him under the authority of the Roman Arch bishop. The community revolted against this through the coonan cross oath of 1653.

The Archdeacon as Bishop

After the coonan cross oath the Church ordained the Arch deacon as a bishop with the name Mar Thoma I. This ordination of the archdeacon as a bishop was a very important turning point in the history of the development of authority in the Malankara Church. All the powers of the century old arch deacon with some more spiritual authority was given to the Archdeacon when he was elevated to the position of a bishop.

The Marthoma Metrans continued in succession till the early 19th century with the names Mar Thoma I,II,etc. till Mar Thoma VIII. and they ruled the church from 1653 to 1816.

The spiritual as well as the administrative authority of the community were vested on the Mar Thoma Metrans during this period.

Malankara Metropolitan

In 1816 Pulikottil Joseph Mar Dioysius became a bishop and he got an approval letter known as the Royal Proclamation from the Travancore government to function as the Metropolitan of the community. Now on wards the head of the Church came to be known as Malankara Metropolitan. The position of the Malanakara Metropolitan in the 19th century is a growth from the position of the Marthoma Metrans. The power and authority of the Malanakara Metropolitan got more recognition than the power and authority of the Archdeacons and Marthoma Metrans because of some political changes in the country through the establishment of British rule.

From 1816, DionysiusII, DionysiusIII, DionysiusIV, Mar Athanasios and DionysiusV were the Malanakara Metropolitans in the 19th century. Among these Mar Athanasios and Mar Dionysius V exercised enormous spiritual as well as temporal powers inside and outside the community.

Mar Dionysius V was the Malankara Metropolitan at the time of the Synod of Mulanthuruthy (1876). During the later half of the 19th century there occurred a split in the community because of the works of the CMS missionaries and the reformation supported by them. This invited a closer interference of the Patriarch of Antioch.

To get over the difficulties caused by the reformation and to support Mar Dionysius V against the reformers the Church invited the Patriarch to come over to India.

The Patriarch Peter III of Antioch came here in 1875. Instead of healing the division in the community the Patriarch tried to make use of the situation to establish his authority in the church by suppressing the authority of the Malanakra Metropolitan.

He strongly stood with Mar Dionysius and called the Synod of Mulanthuruthy.

The Patriarch presided over the synod and directed its proceedings and took some decisions justifying the actions of the Patriarch in the Malankara Church. After the Synod he divided the church into seven dioceses and consecrated six new bishops to rule each diocese. By these actions the Patriarch was trying to reduce the authorities of the Malankara Metropolitan.

The way to Catholicate

After the synod of Mulanthuruthy the Church became more conscious about establishing a Catholicate (Maphrianate) in the Malanakra Church mainly to avoid unnecessary interference of the Patriarch of Antioch in the internal affairs of the Church.

The patriarch himself directed the Synod of Mulanthuruthy and attained more powers through its decisions. He claimed as the spiritual and temporal head of the Church.

The Malankara Church which was in dare need of the Patriarch to fight against the reformers yielded to all the demands of the Patriarch. The legal fights against the reformers ended up in the final judgment of the Travencore Royal court in 1889.

The Royal Court judgment was a success to both the Patriarch and Mar Dionysius V in various aspects. The court declared that the Patriarch got spiritual supervisory powers over the Malanakara Church. But it also declared that the Patriarch does not have any temporal authority in the Church. The Patriarch was not satisfied about this decision.

The Patriarch used all his ways and means to establish his spiritual and temporal authority in the Church.

Mar Dionysius V died in 1909 and Mar Dionysius VI became the Malankara Metropolitan. When Mar Dionysius VI became the Malankara Metropolitan, the Patriarch demanded a registered deed from Mar Dionysius declaring perfect allegiance to the patriarch. Mar Dionysius strongly refused to yield to the demands of the Patriarch. The Patriarch excommunicated Mar DionysiusVI on 31st May 1911.The excommunication of Mar Dionysius created lots of confusions and divisions in the Malanakara Church. Most of the influential lay leaders and many clergy in the Church supported Mar Dionysius and stood firm with him.

The Malankara Metropolitan was the supreme authority in the Church throughout the past years and the Patriarchs were always trying with all their means to exterminate that position from the Church.

The Church clearly understood the intention of the Patriarch when he excommunicated Mar DionysisVI.

The consecration of the Catholicose

When the Patriarch excommunicated mar Dionysius VI, there were two Patriarchs of Antioch; one was Abdulla who had powers according to the legal documents knows as Firman of the Turkish government and the other was Abdedmassiah who was senior and at the same time inactive at Turkey since the government withdrew his firman.

Abdulla was the one who excommunicated the Malanakara Metropolitan Mar Dionysius. The Malankara Church contacted Abdedmassiah and invited him to Malankara. The patriarch came and presided over the meetings of the Episcopal Synod of the Malankara church that decided to consecrate a Catholicose for the Malankara Church. Mar Ivanios Metropolitan of the Kandanadu Diocese was unanimously proposed to the post of Catholicose.

On 17th September 1912 (Kanni 2, 1088), at St. Marys Church founded by St.Thomas in Niranam, Mar Ivanios Metropolitan was consecrated with the name Mar Baselios Paulose First as the first Catholicose of Malankara Church. The chief celebrant of the consecration ceremony was the Patriarch Mar Abdedmassiah himself. After the consecration the Patriarch issued two Kalpanas declaring the importance, privileges, powers and functions of the Catholicose.

All the authorities and privileges enjoyed by the Patriarch in the Church as its head was given to the Catholicose also. By the consecration of the Catholicose the Indian Church asserted and declared its full autonomy and became a full autocephalous (having its own head) Church. After the demise of the Catholicose Baselicose Paulose I, the Bishops in Malankara together with Mar Dionysius VI consecrated Mar Philoxenos of Vakathanam as the second Catholicos with the name Baselius Geevarghese I. When he died in 1928, Mar Gregorios was elected as his successor. He was consecrated by the Indian Bishops in February 13, 1929 with the title Baselius Geevarghese II .

The Patriarchal group questioned the validity of the Catholicate in law courts and the litigation went on up to the Supreme court. In September 12, 1958, the constitutional bench of the supreme court of India recognized the validity of the Catholicate and unanimously declared that the Patriarch of Antioch does not have any authority over the Malankara church and that the Indian church is completely free under the Catholicos of the East. Without doubt the judgment stated that all the parishes and properties of the Malankara church are under the authority of the Catholicos.

Moved by the final judgment of the Supreme Court of India, the Patriarch’s group unanimously recommended to the Patriarch Ignatius Yacob III to accept the Catholicos as the head of the Indian church. In December 1958, the Patriarch and the Catholicos subjected to the constitution of the Malankara church and accepted each other by exchanging letters.

The peace in the Indian Orthodox church which started with the mutual acceptance of the Catholicos and the Patriarch continued without much problem till the demise of the Catholicose Geevarghese II in 1964. The Malankara Association (representative body for the church) elected Mar Augen Thimothios as the next Catholicose, According to the constitution of the church, the Syrian Patriarch who was on friendly terms with the Malankara church, was also invited officially to participate in the consecration of the Catholicose. The Patriarch accepted the invitation of the Malankara church and came down to India and co-operated with the Malankara synod to consecrate the Catholicose.

Conclusion

In all the Churches the position of the Patriarch or the Catholicose was a development of authority in their history. In Rome, Alexandria, Antioch and Constantinople and in the Persian Church it achieved almost full development and recognition in the 4th century itself. Jerusalem became a Patriarchate at the council of Chalcedone in 451. The Georgian and Armenian Catholicose were also developed in the same period.

The Patriarchate was developed in Russian Orthodox Church between 1448 and 1589. In Rumenia it was established in 1885. The Serbian Patriarcahte was established in 1879 and the Bulgarian patriarchate was established in 1883. The patriarchate of Ethiopea was established in 1958 only. It happened in the Malankara Orthodox Church in 1912.

The Catholicate in India was a growth and development through centuries within the Malankara Church. Of course the developments in other churches like Persia, Antioch Rome and external interferences has influenced the growth in different stages. It should always be considered as a symbol of Apostolic origin, authority and heritage as well as nationality and independence of the Malankara Orthodox Church. Throughout centuries the Metropolitan heads of the Thomas Christians were known as the apostolic successors of St.Thomas, the founder of the Indian church. The Vatican Syriac codex 22 written in 1301 at Kodungalloor refers to the Metropolitan of the church as ‘The Metropolitan Bishop of the See of St. Thomas, and of the whole church of Christians in India’. The church always asserted that St. Thomas had his apostolic throne in India as St. Peter had it in Rome or Antioch. When the Catholicate was established the catholicose as the head of the Malankara church, took the title ‘The successor of the Apostolic throne of St. Thomas’.

Though I live in Kochi, my roots are in Pathanamthitta. My neighbour, who is a Malankara Reeth man, sitting in my house told my father, “Sir, the biggest mistake my family made was that we joined the Reeth. We regret that now.”

I do not want to write here what he told us after that.

His sister, who was a nun, left the convent after taking off the robe.

Many of our people who have joined the Reeth feel the same.
Can we think of some movement to help them?

  3. It is immaterial if somebody from Reeth return to Orthodox or Marthoma join RCSC or make criss cross transfers of Church. Almost every one has relatives in other groups of the community.
Our aim should be to return to the pre 16th century positions and March forward as one big community,by eliminating all sorts of things, positions, etc. that did not exist in the pre 16th century Malankara Nazarani community.

  4. mathai says:

cardinal clemis is not catholicos ,he is catholikka bava as per media

  5. Seeing the orthodox people who joined the’ reeth prasthaanam ‘for material benefits are un comfortable in the catholic nature of that group, like fish out of water, they started introducing new tricks like calling their bishops as metropolitans, elevating some of their priests as core episcopas and rambaans and changing’ roopathaas ‘in to ‘badrasamam’ etc. and finally stealing the catholicos position.Everything to resemble the orthodox church.

The present Arch bishop of Trivandrum behave like ‘ grahani’ infected children who grab everything that they see in front of them and grab everything and eat ,there by appear with a small head and a big stomach. He wants to use all tittle like catholicose, malankara metropolitan, successor of st.Thomas, moran mor
(thank god the pope do not understand the meaning of that).but he can not use the prefix His Holiness which only pope and the catholicose of the east are entitiled to use.

Let us congratulate him for the genuine position of cardinal bestowed up on him by Rome. But the name of the new cardinal in the list in Rome is given as ‘Arch bishop of Trivandrum Clemis Thottunkal’.Rome do not know anything more than that.

If a meeting of all the supreme heads of churches in the world are convened ,H.H BASELIOS MARTHOMA PAULOSE II will be seen along with the Pope. But Clemis Thottunkal and Thomas pradhaman will not bee seen any where near as they are only regional heads like a chief minister or a governor.

Jose Thomas seems to unaware that the supreme head in Armenian Orthodox Church is a Catholicos. The position of the Catholicos is higher than that of the Patriarch in the Armenian Church.
I am sure that people with self-respect and integrity will desert the Catholic faith and rejoin the Orthodx faith. Malankara Catholic Church does not have the 5th Diptych (Thubden) – Ivanious had to go against the beief of his forefathers to join the Catholic Church. His omission of the 5th diptych in the Reeth Qurbana is due to this. Anyway people of the Reeth Church are looked down upon by the Jacobite and Orthodox factions, because they deserted the Orthodox faith and joined the Catholic Church for petty financial assistance/ jobs offered by the Catholic Church ( similar to what Protestant churches did) .
I hope they realize the true value of the Orthodox faith and will rejoin the Orthodox Churches, instead of trying to support the Major Archbishop/ Cardinal of a Catholic Church in which they never belonged to in the first place.
People who joined the Protestant churches are rejoining the Orthodox Churches , I am sure that Orthodox Church will have no problem in accepting the Reeth people (former Orthodox ) , if they desert their Catholic faith

  11. Mar Cleemis is no more a ‘Catholica Bawa”! He has been elevated as a Cardinal by Vatican and now he can claim himself as a “Cardinal”!

This leaves with only 2 Catholicoi now in Kerala:

    1) The Century year old HH The Catholicose of Malankara Orthodox Church
    2) 30 year old Shrestha Catholicose of Malankara Jacobite Church.

  12. @ Mr KG

I am not ignorant of the fact that the head of Malankara Catholic Church is only a Major Arch Bishop, which is the title conferred by Vatican. At the same time, I am at a loss to understand why the Kerala Media and almost all the leading Newspapers in Kerala, including Malayala Manorama, address him as “Catholica Bawa”? And as per them, now there are altogether 3 Catholica Bawas in Kerala, including the only legitimate and 100 years ancient HH the Catholicose of Malankara Orthodox Church!

Any way, I will be cautious in future, not to call the 2 others as “Bawa”!

  13. @ Mr KG

I am not ignorant of the fact that the head of the Malankara Catholic Church, Mar Cleemis, is only a Major Arch Bishop. When ‘Bawa’ is the title he conferred himself, I wonder, how come the Kerala Media and almost all the leading News papers (including Malayala Manorama), prefer to address him as ‘”Cleemis Bawa” ?

Anyway, I will be cautious in future, not to call him as “Bawa”!

  14. KG says:

    Cleemis Bava?
Majaor ArchBishop is the only title Vatican conferred. Bava is title he gave himself. It is shame for an Orthodox Christian to address him as Bava.

  15. This refers to the nasty comments made here by Mr. Jose, who seems to be either a Jacobite or a Roman Catholic, which reads as follows:-
“From where this so called Catholicate re-instituted? If it was happened in 1912, most probably it was did by Patriarch Abded Mishiha. Truth is that he can’t re-institute or institute so called Catholicate here. He instituted some thing here. Most probably he can institute only what he has. If so it was ‘Maphrianate’. it was under him & it was vacant at that time. Means in 1912 Abded Mishiha Patriarch re-instituted MAPHRIANATE in Malankara. This December in the presence of Dalai Lama IOC is celebrating 100th anniversary of the re-institution of MAPHRIANATE only, NOT Catholicate”.

All these utterances of Mr. Jose, either shows his ignorance about church history or his rivalry towards Malankara Orthodox Church!

    1) I wish, he should know the fact that the post “Catholicose” was first originated in Persian church with head quarters at Edessa , as a result of the decision of Jerusalem Synod in the year AD 231. This post has continued up to 6th century and perished in the year A.D. 579 due to persecution from Muslim rulers. And it was in the year A.D 614 the “Maprianate” in Persian church was formed with Head quarters at Tigris, which was later on shifted to Selukiya. This post was also perished in the year A.D. 1840 in Persian church, due to Muslim persecution. Both these posts fell vacant in the Persian church for almost 72 years and it was in the year 1912 the “Catholicate” was revived and re-instituted at Malankara Church by Patriarch Abded Mishiha at Niranam St. Marys Church. In this connection, he has also issued his two bulls, one dated Sept. 15th 1912 and another one dated February 23rd, 1913, wherein he has called the revived post at Malankara, as “Catholicose and or Maprianate”. And it was on the basis of these 2 bulls, the Supreme Court of India gave its final verdict in the year 1958, wherein the Hon. court has upheld the validity of “Catholicate” at Malanakara!

    2) The Malankara Orthodox Church is an important and integral part of Malankara Sabha, which was found by the Apostle St. Thomas, in the year AD 52. Hence, the Church has got every right to celebrate its 1960 years of its existence in Kerala and in Universe and no one can deny its rights!

    3) Finally, one simple question to Mr. Jose! . If it was the “Maprianate” that was reinstituted at Malankara in the year 1912, why did the Jacobite faction adopted the name “Catholicose” for their Shrestha Bava, almost 30 years ago? Why did the Malankara Catholic Church headed by Cleemis Bava, adopted the same name “Catholicose”?

  19. Jose may be a Latin catholic or a new convert who can not tolerate Orthodox church which is a part of the ancient St.Thomas Christian community celebrating 1960th year of it’s existence in the Indian soil. You must read the statement of Even the Marthoma metropolitan(Joseph Marthoma)regarding the importance of theCatholicate centenary celebration.

A priest is called as pastor in America. But in Kerala pastor means a pentecostal pastor.Mafriana may be the other name of Catholicose. So what? The supreme head of the Indian Orthodox church is known as the Catholicose of the east who need not to wait for orders form foreign masters.Catholicate is the symbol of independence of the Church.

So mind your own business ,Do not try to poke your nose in unwanted places, and desist from unsolicited comments.

  20. KG says:

to_KG – Please understand that both bava kakshi and metran kakshi follow the same Orthodox faith and NOT CAtholic faith. I hope you understand the difference between Catholic and Orthodox faith. The recently ordained Baranabas bishop – asst metropolitan of niranam diocese joined the Bava kakshi from metran Kakshi. I dont see that as aproblem as faith shared by Bava and metran kakshis are the same unlike Reeth church

  21. Malankara Church making a constitution saying that the “Patriarch ” of Antioch is the Supreme Head of the Church (Article 1) and Mar Ivanios accepting Pope as head of His church are equally wrong. The church should first rectify its own blunder by deleting this article from the constitution.
Is it proper for the church to remember a Patriarch who has nothing to do with us while forgetting our Walia Baava duribg the Thubaden?
Lot of things are to be rectified.

  22. to_KG says:

KG, in that case what is the degnity of the three bishops who joined MOC.

  23. KG says:

The media during initial days of emergence of two new Catholicoi ( Bava kakshi & Reeth) used to address them as Catholicos. But lately I have seen some newspapers including ‘The Hindu ‘ address the Bava Kakshi Catholicos as Shresta Bava and Reeth Catholicos as Major Archbishop. It helps people to differentiate and help in creation of their own identity. It is only newspapers like Mangalam ( RC spirit), Deepika (RC spirit) and Manorma ( circulation) address the Reeth Catholicos as the Catholicos. Manorma has been kind enough to use the title His Holiness for our Bava. The Reeth Major Archbishop has been recently inviting the Patriarch of Maronite Church to India. He might succeed in instilling some dignity by these gimmicks among the Reeth folks who have deserted Orthodox faith followed by their own ancestors under the guidance of Ivanious who joined the Catholic Church as he was not appointed as the Catholicos. I am surprised how people with dignity could desert the faith followed by their own ancestors and cannot understand how a person like Ivanious who deserted the Orthodox Church for worldly pleasure can be considered for the position of “Servant of God” – make sense because Rome will be willing to give that title to even murderers who have massacred millions of Muslims for propagating Catholic faith. All titles that were obtained by self-proclamation will not last. Only the truth with survive, the rest will perish.

  24. Any person has a right to address any one in any manner he likes. He can be sub serviant to any body he wishes to be.
But as far as Malankara Nazarenians of St. Thomas are concerned, they have not been made christians by St. Thomas to be under Vatican or Antioch or Canterbury or whatever you may call.
The Apostle has appointed the Arch Deacon to look after his flock and only an Archdeacon has the right to rule over the Malankara Nazaranis.
All other titles are alien to our community and should be abandoned,
It is no wonder that the number of catholicos,s are growing.
The total outcome of bringing the foreign Catholicate to India is splitting of our community into three. The Chaldeons are responsible for another Chunk, while Canterbury has also made their contributions to dis integrate this great community.
If all the Malankara Nazaranis were united, there is no doubt it would have been the Largest and Mightiest Church in the world.

  25. Dear Kuttikandathil,
We are free to change name of catholicos to Catholicos patriarch, supreme patriarch, pope patriarch and so on.. But tell me what is going to stop other communities from renaming the title of their head as we do?.

Being orthodox christians, there is nothing to celebrate except resurrection of or lord and savior.
In the name of catholicose and centenary celebrations lot of nonsense are going on. It will give new cash rich people to show their pomp. As I have observed church has fallen as a mere organisation which gathers money in name of charity, educational institutions and aramanas.

Malankara orthodox church is nailing its coffin, when it comes to preaching gospel and educating its faithful about what orthodoxy is.
All holy sacraments have become show off , church and its spiritual leaders are cheering faithful.
Could anyone tell me what attempts are made by church to guide people to lead an orthodox way of life? – Nothing……..
after few decades would any one be in church to hold muthukkuda and ndapanthal for spiritual leaders.

I have a coptic orthodo friend who used to say ‘ I am orthodox christian because my Baba (HH Pope Shenuda) is orthodox christian. I know what he teaches and practises is right.
    enough said
    Thank You
    Matthew Chacko

  26. Mr. Daniel Reji,

Many Jacobites like you, have already posted here the speech of Mar Milithiose, which was done by him at Thiruvalla Simhasana Church in the year 1995. We (the Malankara Orthodox church members) have heard it several time and are well aware of it! So, there is no need for you to post the same here again and again!

Moreover, a speech done by Mar Milithiose, many years before his re-joining the Malankara Orthodox Church, has got no meaning in the changed circumstances! After all, he has realized his past mistakes and corrected it by re-joining the Malankara Orthodox Church!

At last, you said Jai Jai Catholicose! Well Done & Good Enough! Keep it up my dear Jacobite friend!

  27. Daniel Reji says:

Please listen to Mor Milithose regarding this subject.

  28. St. Thomas was the only Apostle who followed the teachings of Lord Jesus Christ to its complete spirit. Following the Lords command that One who wants to become the leader should become a Servant. So he ordained Deacons for Malankara(Deacon= Servant} and he himself became Arch Deacon (Principal Servant) till he left Malankara. In Jerusalem also SEVENTY DEACONS were appointed.
Will the church think of throwing away the imported positions like,Metropolitan,Arch Bishop, Catholicose etc. and reintroduce the positions given to our fore fathers by our Most Blessed Apostle,
We can have Arch Deacon as Head of the church, Deacons as head of Diocese. and Achens can be called Patriarch(Father.)

  29. Mr.Jacob, why do you look for God here and there.Look in to your own heart,if that is a suitable place for God ,He will be there surely.

  30. Jacob says:

Good article! But I don’t see God in this. I can only see that we are trying to position our selves in a particular order of power. Nothing but status and power struggle. Where is Jesus in all these conversation ? Does Jesus matter ? . Absolutely not …. Only what matters is that Bishops and Achens and what not ….

My advise is take your wooden staff (Instead of the Golden decorated one) and lead the sheep for the sake of the allmighty god. Get into the shoes of Moses … and leave the administration to the laymen ….

  31. I am sorry for the delay to post my comments here. I am of the opinion that it does not sound good that each and every head of a Christian Church denomination in Kerala, to be called by the same name “Catholicose”. When there exist a ” Catholicose of the East” in Kerala since 1912, where is the scope for another two religious heads, one at Puthenkurishu and other one at Trivandrum, to be called as “Catholicose” ?

There can be only one ‘King Lion’ in a forest! When only one can be the original, the other two should be duplicates! In order to keep the reputation of the high office of the ancient “Catholicose” and to avoid confusion in the minds of the common public, it is high time that the other two duplicates, should adopt a different name other than Catholicose, at the earliest!

  32. Mr.Thomas, I remember once H.G.Milithios Thirumeni of Trichur said why we are confused or get provoked by such position which our other christian denomination give to thier head especially when its named as Catholicos. Its all gimick to fool the poor people of Kerala. Our Bava post is a legitimate post not originated in 2001 or after that. We should promote and be proud of the post. Yes to get a broader image in the world and to fool the poor public we can reinvent a new post as mentioned by you in 2012 but it will be of no use. Its my personal opinion. Finally Catholicos of India and Major Archbishop if they wish to proclaim themselves as Catholicose its upto them. But If I am not wrong they cant be the Catholicose of the East & Malankara Metropolitan. Jay Jay Catholicose of East.

  33. At a time when self proclaimed ‘ More and more’ Baselios Catholicas are surfacing in Kerala it is high time that the official name of the supreme head of Malankara (Indian)Orthodox Church should be changed as ‘Catholicos Patriarch’ of Indian Orthodox Church.A proclamation to this effect should be made when we celebrate the centenary of Catholicate in November 2012.
