MUSCAT: Vicars and managing committee members of the Muscat Mar Gregorios Orthodox Maha Edavaka paid glowing tributes to senior Metropolitan and Sabha Ratnam LL HG Dr Geevarghese Mar Osthathios (1918-2012) who passed away in Parumala on February 16.
Maha Edavaka Associate Vicar Fr Binu John Thomas led the congregation in paying tributes after the Holy Eucharist.
Achen said Mar Osthathios simple life was worth emulating and his missionary zeal placed Indian Orthodox community on the global stage. He travelled where none ventured to and it was due to his efforts that the Malankara community made its presence not in Kerala but also in North India and abroad.
MGOME Secretary Joseph Varghese in his tributes to the departed soul pointed how over 20 missionary centres were working successfully in India due to his blessings. Many of them were orphanages and homes for the aged.
The Metropolitan founded the National Association of Mission Studies (NAMS) in 1984 to cultivate the culture of sharing and to enhance the understanding of the mission activities.
He recalled the Metropolitan’s quote on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. “I wish that when I die, no one decorates my corpus with flowers, rather they donate those funds to charity as money or as clothes.” Such was his humility and down-to-earth nature, he mentioned.
Geevarghese Mar Osthathios had paid a visit to the St Thomas Church in Oman, Ruwi, during its consecration way back in February 2000.
A condolence advertisement was also issued in Times of Oman, the local English daily of February 19, 2012.
