Apostle of Love Leaves to His Eternal Source of Love; Metropolitan Mar Osthathios Passes Away

PARUMALA: Voice of mission echoed for more than five decades from Malankara turned to a blessed remembrance today. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Osthathios, Senior Metropolitan and Metropolitan Emeritus of the Diocese of Niranam passed away today in the evening at 7.45 IST. End of journey of the great visionary was at St. Gregorios Hospital, Parumala, where he was spending his last days under medical supervision.

Entombment of Metropolitan Dr. Geevarghese Mar Osthathios will take place on Saturday, February 18 at the chapel of St. Paul’s Mission Training Center, Mavelikkara. The mortal remainings are kept at St. Peters and St. Pauls Church, Paruamala.

Both the kidneys of the Metropolitan had failed last week and therefore, the medical team tried to do dialysis on him. However, the attempts to perform dialysis were with no success. The Metropolitan was immediately moved to the ventilator for sustenance. “Thousands of poor patients in this world have no access for dialysis and therefore, do not let me undergo dialysis”, pleaded Mar Osthathios earlier. His compassion for the poor strongly reflected in his words and the noble longing came true just as he wished himself for.

Fr. K.I. Philip Ramban of St. Paul’s Ashram Puthuppady, Thankachen, the long term ally and driver of Metropolitan Mar Osthathios, and children of Mar Osthathios’ brothers Dr. K.M. Mathew and P.K. Joshua from Baltimore and Atlanta were at Parumala Hospital on Thursday morning and they were with the Metropolitan during his last hours.

Metropolitans Dr. Yuhanon Mar Chrysostomos of Niranam, Dr. Yuhanon Mar Theodoros of Kottrakkara-Punalur, Geevarghese Mar Ivanios of Kottayam, Dr. Gabriel Mar Gregorios of Thiruvananthapuram, Pualose Mar Pachomios of Mavelikkara, Dr. Mathews Mar Severios of Kandanadu West, Dr. Joshua Mar Nichodemus of Nilackal, Mathews Mar Theodosios of Idukki, and Dr. Abraham Mar Epiphanios of Sultan’s Battery were also at Parumala Hospital at the time of demise of the Metropolitan.
