MUSCAT : A splendid performance by the Martha Maria Samajam members who performed the Villadicham Pattu stole the show at the Muscat Mar Gregorios Maha Edavaka Parish day programme on November 4, 2011.

Villu Paatu also known as Villadicham Pattu is an ancient form of musical story-telling art of South Kerala.

About 12 Samajam ladies performed the song Akkaalam yackoob thanthe makkalum pathu perum mayi addu madukal koottavum ai meicha…. to the accompaniment of cheers from the audience.

The Martha Maria Samajam team comprised of Anila Salbi, Annamma Rajan, Annamma Varghese, Annamma Vinu, Daisy Babu, Deenamma Thomas, Gracy Mathew, Lally George, Lekha Kuriakose, Saramma Joseph, Saramma Mammen and Susy Daniel.

Villadichan Pattu literally means a song sung to the strumming of the villu (a big bow with a tout string).

This ancient ritual art form, with much prominence for its music, is more prevalent in parts of Thiruvananthapuram. The themes are based on mythology and are presented either during the day or at night. The duration of a performance varies with that of the story. However, the Muscat church ladies fine tuned it to Biblical theme.

Dr Zachariah Mar Aprem, Metropolitan of Adoor-Kadampanaadu Diocese, was the chief guest along with Fr James Geevarghese, Vicar, Maha Edavaka and the managing committee members at the fete and sale held after the Holy Eucharist.

The song was part of the variety entertainment programme along with dances and skits performed by Sunday School students and MGOCYM.

Earlier, the Samajam members showed their culinary skills by putting up the vast food court during the parish festival.
