Stallions, Achievers crowned maiden champs at Diocese Sports Meet
Final Scores: Cricket: SMOC Stallions beat Gregorian’z by 4 runs
Throwball: Achievers crush Warriors in 2-0 sets

BENGALURU: Stallions from St Mary’s Orthodox Church, Jalahalli and Achievers from St Gregorios Orthodox Church, Mathikere are the maiden champions at the ‘Titulus’ Annual Sports Meet of the Bengaluru Diocese held on October 8, 2011.

In an edge of the seat thriller, Stallions won a hard fought battle with Gregorian’z from Mar Gregorios Church, Hebbal in the men’s cricket final. Batting first, Gregorian’z scored 38 for 7 in 10 overs while Stallions replied with a tie in 8.3 overs.

In the Superover, SMOC scored 8 runs while Gregorianz could manage only 5 which narrowly dashed their hopes. SMOC thus romped home by 4 runs and 1.3 overs to spare.

In the women’s throw ball final, Achievers crushed Warriors of East from St Thomas Church, Bangalore East in 2-0 sets to lift the trophy.

Stallions never failed to put down their expectations. Even exit polls on Facebook proved this. Dilin Kuriakose, Captain of Stallions, went poetic on Facebook. This young University of Essex student of financial engineering and risk management was an inspiration to his team. He wrote:
We are the ‘SMOC Stallions’ and we are the best;
Once we get it started you’ll forget about the rest;
You’ve seen the other teams;
They don’t pass the test;
They’re not number one;
Simply second
We’re the best!

Ajo Varghese, techie from IBM India, Hyderabad and the skipper of the runner-up Gregorian’z was equally pleased in putting a tough fight in the end.

In his speech, Dr Mar Seraphim praised the splendid display of professionalism from the sports men and women towards the successful conduct of ‘Titulus.’

The Metropolitan in a thankful posting on Facebook wrote: “Titulus was well organised. I congratulate the MGOCSM & OCYM committee for organising such a wonderful event. It was nice seeing all the youth in the Bangalore region. I encourage the young people of our diocese to continue this unity. May God bless you all.”

The semis and finals were held at the St John’s Hospital and Medical College Grounds from 7.30 am to 4.30 pm.

Trophies were awarded to the champions and individual players by HG Dr Abraham Mar Seraphim, Metropolitan, Bengaluru Diocese.

Presence of the clergymen at the grounds truly boosted the performance of the players and for the support rendered to their respective teams.

The most gleeful faces were from Fr Iype P Alex, Vicar of the winning church, the St Mary’s Orthodox Valiyapally, Jalahalli and Fr K M Jacob, Vicar, St Gregorios Orthodox Church, Mathikere. OCYM Vice President Fr Saji Daniel also extended support to the meet.

Earlier, Basil Blasters from St Baselios Church, Marathahalli and St Gregorios XI from St Greogrios Church, Mysore also credited themselves by reaching the semi-final stage of the cricket tournament.

‘Titulus’ was hosted by Mar Gregorios Orthodox Church, Hebbal.

Trophies for the winners were sponsored by Whitefield-based Soukya Holistic Centre.

The role of the volunteers and OCYM members towards the conduct of the tournament must be appreciated.
Mention must be made of Hebbal St Gregorious OCYM members and individuals Anish Varghese for developing ‘Titulus’ website, posters and logo, Aaron Koshy Mathew, Ajit Mathew George, Jiju Thomas and their dedicated team towards making it a success.
