KOCHI, Sept 13 (PTI): The Kerala High Court today referred the dispute between the Jacobite and Orthodox factions of the Malankara church over ownership of Kolenchery St Peter’s and St Paul’s church for mediation.

The president of Kerala mediation centre, Justice Thothathil B Radhakrishnan referred the matter for mediation on an application by Ernakulam district Collector, P I Shaikh Pareeth.

The mediation will be conducted by Senior Advocate N Dharmadan and advocate Sreelal Warrier.

Tension has been prevailing in Kolencherry since Catholicos Baelious Mar Thoma Paulose II, who heads the Orthodox faction went on an indefinite fast since Sunday evening, demanding execution of the court order which allows the faction to have the ownership of the two churches.

Catholicos Baselious Thomas I, heading the Jacobite faction, is also undertaking a fast demanding that status quo be maintained until a final settlement is reached.

The Orthodox faction will observe a protest day tomorrow in all the churches under it. A tense situation is prevailing in the area. All efforts by the Collector to sort out the issue has not so far yielded any results following which the Collector had approached the high court.

There is nothing new about the regional differences – we accept that and move on! When the kings were in power in Travengore and Malabar they instilled a fear factor about “Thekkeru” (cunning and shrewd people!) From the interlude with the press this came across clearly as power struggle. Peace cannot be bought or imposed as we learnt from the arab-spring between various factions; but look at the united prostration of the crowd as they worship. God is only where people are united for a common cause. In a dispute majority have the final say and may I suggest the minority may find peace elsewhere without quoteing past history.

JOC can do nothing to Thomas Mor Athanasios and Mor Milithios and nothing about the properties handled by both, because they only accepted the court verdict.

So it no ‘sympathy’ from JOC, but severe handicap, they can do nothing about it. They cant approch court, against people who accepted court verdict.

Your intial question was, ‘presence of Orthodox Christians’ in North. The answer I gave was Catholicos I being from Kolenchery. Is he from kolenchery or not? So I have answered your question. He being not allowed inside the Kolenchery church, shows how pathetic people of Kolenchery were, by expelling a 75 year old man out. Isnt because of that misdeed that the church remained closed for years, its the tears of that poor old man, that you people are loosing the court cases. Think about this kind of attrocities commited against people in Northern districts.

Let me ask a question, now what Gospel is your leadership preaching to us ?

Atleast we are allowing the jacobites to worship, we never asked them to vaccate forever.

About Augen Bava, he was present when the Catholicate was installed at Niranam. Abdulla Patriarch, did spread many rumours about Abded Mashiha Patriarch leading to confusion here, it was Augen Bava who was deacon in Syria, who had first hand information about people, did communicate to Vattsheril thirumeni, about the holiness of Abded Mashiha Patriarch, and the ‘means’ through which Abdulla Patriarch became the Patriach. He was from the begining, pro-independance and favoured autocephaly, even though he was in the Jacobite faction.

And how about the many people like Catholicos I, who from the beginning were forced out of their own parish. The claims of the fantic jacobites who are agasint unity, that EKM, Kandanad and Ankamaly were all 100% jacobite dominated is far stretched.

    Abraham,

The first Catholicos, Baselious Paulose I, was from Kolenchery, couldnt even enter the church from then..Auwgen bawa was the catholicose when the church was UNITED; and then later on went to IOC side..But even before Auwgen bawa has helped IOC..But what to do..its depends person to person..
See for example Thomas mor athanasious (Kadanad), he shifted to IOC; also he took the properties of SOC church also…But SOC church have’nt raised any issues agaisnt it…

I am sorry, I could see all of your ‘tharavela’ recently only, as I was busy with certain my own things, during the last more than 10 days. Please wait till Monday, when I will be giving you a befitting reply to all of your comments posted in ‘ Indian Orthodox Herald’

  8. MAR IVANIOS GOT THE MOTIVATION TO JOIN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH FROM NONE OTHER THAN THE PATRIARCH ABDULLA.HE LEFT THE SYRIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH TO JOIN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND AFTER 8 YEARS HE CAME BACK TO BECOME THE PATRIARCH WHEN ABDEL MASIH PATRIARCH WAS DEPOSED BY THE TURKEY GOVERNMENT.HE MUST HAVE UTILISED THE MONEY HE GOT FROM THE CATHOLIC CHURCH TO BRIBE THE TURKY SULTAN.

Thats a terrible propaganda, by Ivanios and Company.

1.Their is another story that; the synod discussed the probability of seeking help from an Oriental Orthodox Church.

    2. At the Synod, Ivanios, himself would have, come up with the idea, of seeking help from the Catholic church. Which would have been refuted. Their is no evidence, that any member of the Orthodox church, contacted the Catholic church directly. Ivanios, had this plan in mind, and on several occasions, he made his plan clear to people close to him.

    3. Why did Ivanios, choose to leave the Orthodox church, immediately after Baselios Geevarghese II, was consecrated Catholicos ? He being the most educated man in the church, did dream becoming the Catholicos, however the lot , named Geevarghese II, and it was this frustration that he left the church. His connections with the Catholic church, was during the period 1929- 1930.

    4. This one proof is enough, to refute the stupid claims of Mar Ivanios, The final court decision on Vattipanam, came in 1928, and that year itself vattasheril thirumeni collected the interest. When Vattipanam verdict was ruled out in favour of Malankara Church in 1928, why did Mar Ivanios wait till 1930 to join the catholic church? To whom should he be committed, the church which took all his educational expenses from Class V, or some catholic leaders, whom he came into contact, couple of years back through letters???

    5. The motivation for Mar Ivanios to abandon his church, was position and wealth. Much about him and his misdeeds are well written by KV Mammen in his book, “Mar Ivaniosum reeth prasthanavum”

Sorry that is a wrong propaganda by your church.

The first Catholicos, Baselious Paulose I, was from Kolenchery ( Ernakulam Dist)

The fourth Catholicos, Baselios Augen, was from Perumbavoor ( Eranakulam Dist). He was pro-unity, even before the church merged.

Since am not from the regions mentioned above, I would not be in position, to out-rightly mention people from the North. Will get back if I find more.

  11. Geogy says:

First of all, there were no Indian Orthodox group in the region of Kochi, Kadanad & Angamali before 1950′s ..After the UNITY (1958 to 1972) people amoung the Syrian Orthodoxh church moved to Indian Orthodox faith…

  13. This is not a flash news, but bit old.The drunken Jacobite hooligans attacked and manhandled the Reporter channel staff at Kolencherry. The speech delivered by H,B. after the incident boosted the morale of the attackers more than the liquor could do,reported the channel in their news bulletin.
H.G.Yuhanon Mar Chrisostomos of the Niranam diocese also was attacked by the same people at another occasion. What a peace loving people!

  14. Reni Daniel says:

    Ommen Sir
It was not a protest against the HIGH COURT. In fact we are grateful to the Hon High Court for examining the case and granting us justice. It was the fault of District admnistration.

This loation is near the HIGH COURT and is the best place for catching the attention of District authorities as well as general public

    Thank you

Can you please provide the link from where you copied the above? The Hindu, report of this news, was not of the above ‘wording’.

  17. Always we are the loosers, we should never forget what the happened when the verdict was once in favour of Puthenkurishu Society(Jacobites). this is the time for us to be alive from our sleep or else my dear brothers and sisters the history will speek to our children that we had made them loosers…..Our Holy Father is observing hunger strike for us….he is receving hurts for us…..he is struggling for us……Never ever forget……..
Ommen Chandy is a very clever politician he is with overconfidence which will dig his grave……… we will never forget his purposeful avoidence of our Holy Church……I feel pity on him who is sitting in the Throne feared about dager on the top……….

  18. The Hon. Ernakulam District Court have given its verdict and the Kerala High Court have rejected the Appeal of the Jacobite group. Hence, the verdict of the Ernakulam District Court stands still. It has now become the duty of the Kerala Government headed by Mr. Oommen Chandy to implement it!

Then why to go for a fast in front of Hon. Kerala High Court? In all real sense, the venue of the fast should be before the office of the Chief Minister at Secretariat, Trivandrum!

  19. Reni Daniel says:

TODAY MORNING till 3 pm WE ARE GOING TO FAST BEFORE THE HON. HIGH COURT OF KERALA in Kochi

  20. Reni Daniel says:

WHAT IS IN YOUR SCHOOL CERTIFICATE? Is it JACOBITE or is it ORTHODOX?
Some people say they have the name of their church as ‘JACOBITE’ in their SSLC book. My SSLC book says ‘ORTHODOX’. It is the name of all ORTHODOX churches in the world including Antioch. Why do you have the name of an Archdiocese as your religion?

In that case I should have my religion as Kochi Diocese, since… I belong to the Kochi diocese of Orthodox Church.

In fact many including Jacobites do NOT know that they are just an ARCHDIOCESE of the Antioch Chuch.

So dear friends who have ‘JACOBITE’ in your SSLC book, apprach the state education dept for correcting your Church’s name.
YOU should write the real name of your Church as ORTHODOX (which is also the name of the Church in Antioch)
