There will come a time soon in the Indian Orthodox Church where we will not have any simple churches left – only Cathedrals or Maha Edavaka or a Vailya Palli. No one wants Ceriya Palli because it sounds belittling. I am sure if there are no enough names, people will come up with Maha Valiya Palli or something similar.

There is no change in status, this is just to please the whims of the people. Sometimes it is given in recognition for the parish’s efforts in humanitarian deeds. However, why would you want to be recognized for your charitable works if what Christ said is just the opposite? “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

The words of Christ always gets sidelined in the Church. We only read the Gospel, but do not let it affect us or change us. God help us in our weakness.

What exactly does it mean when a status of a church changes? Is “Maha Edavaka” or “Mega Parish” the same as “Cathedral” or is it different?
