MUSCAT: Fr James Geevarghese, Vicar and President will lead a four-member delegation to attend the ‘Sunthroniso’ or ‘Enthronement’ and inauguration of the Ahmedabad Diocese to be held on March 5, 2011.
The big event in the annals of the nascent diocese is slated to be held at St Thomas Diocesan Chapel, Ahmedabad.
Other MGOC members accompanying the vicar are: Cherian P Thomas (Binoye), Diocesan Council Member, Geevarghese Yohannan (Baby), Chairman, Ahemdabad Diocese Development Committee, Mathew Ninan (Raju), attending as a special invitee.
The delegation leaves for Ahmedabad on March 4 and will return back to Muscat on March 7.
Mar Baselios Marthoma Paulose II, Catholicose of the East and Malankara Metropolitan, will grace the occasion and conduct the Episcopal installation at the diocesan chapel.
The Catholicos will be the chief celebrant at the Holy Qurbana on March 5 at 7 am which will be followed by a public meeting and love feast.
Preparations for the big event have already begun and efforts are being made to make the event a grand success.
Pulikkottil Dr Geevarghese Mar Yulios, Metropolitan of Ahmedabad Diocese, had in a Kalpana dated December 16, 2010 held a special diocesan assembly on January 11 this year, to discuss the matter at the Diocesan Headquarters.
The Metropolitan had extended his invite to all the council members, diocesan assembly members, vicars, the managing committee members, leaders of all spiritual organisations and the faithful in the parishes under the Diocese of Ahmedabad to attend the event.
“This (Sunthroniso) event is a big responsibility and therefore it demands a lot of meticulous planning and preparation,” reads the Kalpana signed by Dr Mar Yulios.
The Metropolitan notes that according to the ancient Orthodox custom a Metropolitan is usually consecrated for a Metropolis (Diocese), namely, a big city. However, with the passage of time, situations changed and thus, for the convenience our Church has developed the tradition of consecrating Metropolitans together at one particular place. However, the custom of installing a Metropolitan at a particular city (for a particular Diocese) continued and such installations were called Sunthroniso in Syriac or ‘Enthronement’ of a Metropolitan at one particular city or diocese.
