MUSCAT – Kevin Tom Philip and Twinkle Elizabeth John have emerged toppers at the Sunday School Final Certificate (SSFC) during December 2010. MGOC Muscat under Ahmedabad Diocese has emerged as the best Sunday School in the Outside Kerala Region in India and the entire GCC region

With this, Mar Gregorios Orthodox Church (MGOC) Muscat has scored a hat-trick by scooping ranks for three consecutive years since 2008, 2009 and 2010. The excellent performance by its Sunday School students is reason enough for this.

Kevin Philip’s distinction mark is all the more special since this is for the first time that a student from the Gulf region has ever achieved this honour since the establishment of OSSAE-OKR.

Kevin dedicates his success to his late grandfather V T Philip, who was also the Headmaster (HM) of St John Sunday School in Chengaroor, Kerala.
Says he about his moment of glory: “My thanks are to the Almighty Lord for giving me this outstanding result at the end of my 10-year Sunday School study. My sincere thanks also are to my parents, my supportive brother (Chris), my dedicated Sunday School Inspector Dr T K Philip, Sunday School headmistress and teacher, Mary Varghese, Jessy Koshy and former teacher Dr Biju Jacob, IA & AS for shaping me what I am.”

The examinations were conducted by the Orthodox Syrian Sunday School Association of the East (Outside Kerala Region)
While Kevin top scored with 86 out of 100 standing first, Twinkle Elizabeth stood third with 84 marks, both obtaining distinction.

Kevin and Twinkle were congratulated by the church on February4, Friday after the Holy Qurbana.

Fr James Geevarghese, Vicar, MGOC, extended his hearty congratulations and blessings on Kevin and Twinkle for bringing honour and glory to the church and to their parents. It was under his tenure as Vicar from 2008 that MGOC Sunday School went on to attain the top spot in the GCC region.
Speaking on behalf of the managing committee, John Thomas (Santhosh), hoped the Sunday School students will strive to keep up its high reputation and emerge as the best among the entire Malankara Orthodox community. “Work on the new floor for having additional rooms to accommodate Sunday School classes will begin soon,” he added.

Kevin is the youngest son of Mr Philip K Philip (General Manager, Muscat Insurance Company) and Mrs Beena Philip. Incidentally, Chris Jeo Philip, their elder son, was also the first rank holder of SSFC from the Gulf region in 2009.

Twinkle is the daughter of John M John (Johney) from the Muscat-based Saud Bahwan Group and Lysa John.

Also outstanding in academics, Kevin had secured an Excellence Award for achieving ‘A1’ grade in the recent CBSE Class X examination.

For the SSFC project, Kevin made an interesting illustration of 7 dioceses outside Kerala on the Indian map, marking their head quarters. He then presented a detailed description about the new Ahmedabad Diocese with focus on MGOC and with a special reference to its Metropolitan head Pulikkottil Dr Geevarghese Mar Yulios, his vision and thinking on Gandhian principles.

Both Kevin and Twinkle are presently Std XI students of Indian School Al Ghobra (ISG) in Muscat.

Twinkle, the third ranker, is also excellent in academics and extra-curriculars.

She has won medals in athletics and was part of the Under-16 Omani girl’s cricket team and had earlier participated in the Kochi National CBSE Sports meet held in December 2010. A talented artiste, Twinkle has also won several prizes with her interest spanning music and is a good singer too. She has excelled in the Church’s annual Talent Scan, Sunday School competitions and in the Memory Verse, singing, Bible reading and elocution contests.

746 candidates appeared for the SSFC examinations held on December 12, 2010. Out of the 678 students who attended, 594 passed with distinction and 250 with First Class.

The 2nd rank went to Sajni Jiji, from St Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Church, Dadar, under Mumbai Diocese.
