SIKHA PATTIA, GUJARAT: One more feather has been added to the Crown of Ahmadabad Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church on the New Year, the Thomas Indian Orthodox Syrian Congregation, Sikha Pattia, Gujarat.
Dr. Geevarghese Mar Yulios, Metropolitan of the Ahmadabad Diocese, issued necessary orders to establish the new congregation in name of the ‘Patron Saint of India’.
‘Motikhavadi’ is an isolated village, situated at the extreme corner of Western coastal area, where big oil refineries like Reliance and Essar are situated. A sizable number of believers of Orthodox Christians are staying in both the townships. Their only alternative to attend Holy Qurbana was Jamnagar City, 40 Kilometers away, where St. Gregorios Orthodox Church is situated.
Many Orthodox faithful are working at various facilities at Mepur, Digvijayaram, and Sikha. A few of them used to go to the Jamnagar Church during important feast days. Their difficulty to travelling up to Jamnagar has triggered thoughts of a new congregation at Sikha.
It was during his visit to Reliance Greens that representatives of the Motikavady region and Fr. Benjamin Thomas, vicar of St. Gregorios Orthodox Church, Jamnagar approached Metropolitan Dr. Geevarghese Mar Yulios of Ahmedabad Diocese with the longing to start a new congregation.
For the time being the Holy Qurbana of the St. Thomas Indian Orthodox Syrian Congregation will be held at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Sikha Pattia, on the 2nd Sunday of every month at 6.30 P.M.
Fr. Benjamin Thomas, celebrated first Holy Qurbana for the new congregation on Sunday, January 2nd at 7pm at the St. Thomas Catholic Church. Fr. Joseph Uppumakkal, Vicar of St. Thomas Catholic Church, Mother Reshmi and sisters attended the Holy Qurbana.
