The Catholicate of the East was established by Thomas the Apostle in Edessa, Mesopotamia during his mission. The see was moved to Selucia, the capital of Persian Empire and then to Tigris and Mosul in Iraq. The see was re-established in Malankara (India) by the Patriarch of Antioch HH Mar Abdul Messiah II (1895-1915) in 1912 AD.

  1. Let me pen down following,

1.According to 1934 constitution, Malankara church is a division of Orthdox syrian Church headed by Patrarch of Antioch. Its straight forward statment and doesn’t require any intepretation.Important point to be noted is, this constitution was drafted and approved in at time when factional disputes were in itspeak.

    2. According to 1995 supreme court vedict ‘ Patriarch’s never enjoyed temporal control over malankara and it was not at all a matter of dispute in century long litigations.

2a. Same supremecour verdict says,Patriach’s supremacy has come to a ‘vanishing point’ BUT all the same he (H.H.Patriarch) remains the spiritual head of church and he is the spiritual superior to catholicose.

    3. Above statement is crystal clear from prayers and readings of Sacramnents like Mooro Consecration, Church consecration, Holy Qurbana and Holy Ordinations. ( Even though we have altered some to our convenience).

    4. ‘Mathopadesa Sarangal’ written by Vattaseril Thirumeni, reaffirms the same in a chapter about ‘Priesthood’.The supreme higher authority of priesthood is Moran Mor Ignatius, the Patriarch of Antioch. (Its very significant that, Vattasseril Thirumeni was a strong opponent of then Patriarch and his supporters.)

  2. I may just say in one word.
Can the British Queen say now that she is the supreme authority of India?
There are two ways of freedom. One get freedom from others. Secondly to be freed from others by them selves.
According to the Court decision our Fathers would have get implemented it. But they were peace loving and look for their fellow brothers for unity. Still they look for unity. But certain rackets behind are the hurdles in both end.
Which Patriarch is bothered about India now. What is he doing with your Indian Church now. He is bothered about the rich pasture only now. The Gulf and America. Leave your dreams aside. Reconcile. Unite together or separate from us live in harmony with the orthodox church. The RC Church and any other churches of India are not after us.

  3. Dear Sir,

From Above list, those were Maphrians till Sl. No. 83. From Sl. No. 84 were (we believe) independant catholicoses, but its a continuation of maphrians under the sole authority of H. H. Patriarch of Antioch.Even Patriarch Abdul Masih’s Kalpana mentions nothing about independant Catholicate in Malankara. But the Patriarch Abdul Masih reaffirms the traditional connection between Malankara and Antioch and insisting us not to deviate.

  4. Good try, need more data. thanks

  5. saju Chacko Daniel says:

The present Catholicose is HH Paulose II

  6. There seems a break in the chronology between 1860 – 1912. What about these period ? Also the name of the present Chatholicose is given as Marthoma Paulose I. Please correct it
