BANGALORE: The St Gregorios Orthodox Church Choir at Mathikere in Bangalore, as part of its fund raising campaign, released an Orthodox wedding service CD with an accompanying booklet.
Rev Fr M M Abraham, well-known as the architect of Malabar Diocese, released the CD at a simple ceremony after the Holy Qurbana on October 17, Sunday, in the presence of Vicar Rev Fr K M Jacob, St Gregorios Orthodox Church. Former vicar of the church, Rev Fr Saji Thomas (Saji Achen), also presided over the function.
The well-acclaimed church choir had over the months tirelessly ventured to release the wedding service audio CD in Malayalam. Fr K M Jacob has provided the lead to the CD with his introductory message while the second part has the Mothiram Vazhvinte Susrusha and finally the Kireedam Vazhvinte Susrusha.
The nine member choir team consists of Mathew K Samuel, Jijo Oommen, Shibu Mathew, Biju Thankachan, Abraham P John, Shenoy Mathew, Anish Cherian, Siji George and Shemin Simon.
The crooners are Jijo, Shibu, Biju, Abraham, Shenoy, Anish, Siji and Shemin.
While Anish chipped in with music and keyboards and ably aided by Abraham and Shenoy with mixing and mastering. The CD was recorded at the Church in Mathikere and at Gregorian Digitals.
The wedding book contains a complete service in Malayalam and translated into English as a service book. The audio CD in Malayalam and the booklet is priced at Rs 200. Shenoy Mathai, Treasurer, Choir League, Mathikere Church, says the CD and book will contain the entire sequence helpful for both the priest and the laity. This complete project for Malankara Orthodox Syrian Christian marriage ceremonies is unique. Presently, there seems to be no complete wedding CD being used among the Orthodox churches in Bangalore and Kerala. It is here that the Mathikere church choir members have united to work on the project for a cause.
“This is for the first time we are trying to release an audio CD with the guidance and support of our Lord and prayers of all. This project was planned after several discussions with the choir group and Vicar Rev Fr K M Jacob.”
Shenoy explains the CD will basically focus on three fronts. The other factor relates to changes in tracks and the different notes used while singing. This will help other churches to change the tunes if required and will also aid in selling the CDs and also creating awareness about the church. The other factor relates to generating money to repay loan deficit for purchasing musical instruments for the church choir.
The estimated amount to execute this project works out around Rs 72,000. The project breakup is: Book Printing charge: Rs 39,000, Printing: outlay of CD Cover and CD overlay: Rs 11,000, CD’s and CD cover: Rs 19,000, DTP for Malayalam script: Rs 3,000. If the expenditure outlay works out less than the amount projected, these will be transferred to either the choir fund or to the church committee. The name of the sponsors gets printed in the service book of the last page.
Rev Fr Abraham who completed 50 years of his priesthood on August 15, 2010 was also felicitated on the occasion. Presently, he is the Chaplain at NAMS Snehasadan, Jalahalli, Bangalore. Fr Abraham, considered to be an authority in Church History and Philosophy, is a voracious reader with 3 MAs degree under his belt.
