KOTTAYAM: Malankara Orthodox Church is observing the last three months of 2010, namely, October, November and December as Months of Anti-addiction Initiative. This is to be accomplished under auspices of the Department of Human Empowerment of the Church.

As part of this initiative a broad action plan was coined to create awareness against increasing usage of addicting stuffs in the society. This action plan is to be implemented at parishes and in schools run by the Church. Also it is aimed at young people and students, the most vulnerable cross section of the society towards usage of addicting materials.

The movie ‘U-Turn’ is also part of the ‘Anti-addiction Initiative’. Malankara Church is making a movie for the first time and the main thrust of this movie falls upon dangers that alcohol addiction poses in the personal life of an individual, in his family and in the society at large.

Sunny, a railway employee and an alcohol addict, is the main cast in this movie. His affinity towards alcohol brings nothing but tears into the life of Annie, his wife, and both their children. It even threatens the existence of their family. Life of another girl, Elsa, who has no connection with this family, also tumbles up because of Sunny’s affinity to alcohol. The movie attempts to exhort all alcohol addicts to make a ‘U-Turn’ and everyone not to succumb into the dangers of addiction. A small documentary explaining the message of this movie is also added at the end.

Messages from the Catholicos and Malankara Metropolitan Baselios Marthoma Didymus I, Catholicos Elect Metropolitan Paulose Mar Milithios, Metropolitan Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasios, famous poetess Sugathakumari, and celebrated cine artist and an Orthodox faithful Lalu Alex have also been incorporated into the documentary.

Famous Malayalam actors like Mahesh, Kaladharan, Karthik, Jimmy and Seema G Nair are donning life to various characters in the movie.

Fr. Varghese Lal, renowned and award winning documentary director, who has more than 15 documentaries under his belt, is directing this movie. Fr. Yuhanon John is serving as producer and Fr. P.A. Philip perfected play and script writing. Krishnakumar realizes cinematography.

The movie will be released on October 3rd at Thejas Auditorium, Palarivattom, Ernakulam.
