KOTTAYAM: Malankara Church at large and the bereaved family bid final farewell to the beloved son of Malankara and lover of letters K.M. Mathew, Manorama. Tear drops have fallen down from eyes of many during the funeral services with full state honors at Puthenpalli on Monday, August 02, 2010, in the afternoon local time.

Catholicos of the East Baselios Marthoma Didymus I led the funeral services. Thirty Metropolitans of the Malankara Church, including the Catholicos Elect, assisted the Pontiff therein.

Catholicos Elect Metropolitan Paulose Mar Milithios laid wreath for the Malankara Church on the mortal remains of K.M. Mathew. Metropolitans Geevarghese Mar Coorilos, Dr. Youhanon Mar Demetrios, and Dr. Abraham Mar Seraphim led services at the residence of K.M. Mathew at Kottayam. Fr. Dr. T.J. Joshua and Fr. Dr. K.M. George delivered elegies upon the departed leader of Malankara Church and the media magnate of India.

Priest Trustee Fr. Dr. Jones Abraham Konattu, Lay Trustee M.G. George Muthoottu, and Sabha Secretary Dr. George Joseph also have joined the services.

The Catholicos reflected in depth on the glorious services of K.M. Mathew to the Church as well as to the society. “K.M. Mathew succeeded in coordinating Churches, societies, cultures and generations to work together towards actions of common good. He gave brave leadership to the mother Church in capacities of Managing Committee Member as well as Working Committee Member at various occasions of historic importance. This bereavement will make Malankara feel a big vacuum that K.M. Mathew alone could have filled in”, said the Pontiff.

The Catholicos also remembered the services of K.M. Mathew as a social reformer with incomparable services to the society. He organized exemplary initiatives for heart surgeries for children, palliative care projects, environmental protection activities and rehabilitation activities for victims of natural calamities, the Pontiff reflected further upon.

“K.M. Mathew was a father figure and a respected guru for all. His life teaches everyone how to face extreme and severe struggles of life and to overcome them. He stood tall towards cast, creed, class and religious differences. He was bold enough to surpass inequalities between the rich and the poor. He could outdo disparities between the educated and the people of no letters. He was a philanthropic and a very much service minded person. This is the greatness of this glorious person”, said the Catholicos Elect.

  1. We can not believe that it was mere coincidental that almost all our metrpolitans were assembled in Kottayam for the synod which was to be held from August 2nd onwards,
at the time of the demise of the great son of the Orthodox Church.Mr. K.M.Mathew was an active member in the decision making bodies of our church like his father Mr. Mammen Mappillai. In 1974 when the church was compelled to go with the 2nd samudaya case he offered a car and 25000 Rupees for coducting the case.he was instrumental in getting the service of the famous advocate Mr. Nariman for the church.

The funeral service was coducted by His Holiness the Catholicose and thirty metropolitans of the Orthodox church, which he deserved.
Our heartfelt condolences to the Mnorama family and the Kandathil family.
