Farewell to the Gutsy Leader of Malankara, K.M. Mathew, Manorama

KOTTAYAM: Malankara will bid adieu to the Chief Editor of Malayala Manorama K.M. Mathew, who passed away on August 1, 2010 at Kottayam, India. Funeral services will be with state honors at Puthenpalli Cemetery today.

Viewing is set at the Central Office of Malayala Manorama from 12.30 pm local time onwards. People can bid farewell to their beloved ‘Mathewkuttychayan’ at his home at Kanjikkuzhi as well until 11.00 am. Funeral procession begins at 3.00 pm towards Puthenpalli cemetery.

Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan Baselius Marthoma Didymus I, Chairman of Inter Churches Council Mar Joseph Powathil, Mar Kuriakose Kunnachery, Mar Joseph Perunthottom, Philipose Mar Chrisostom Senior Marthoma Metropolitan, Major Archbishop of Malankara Rite Mar Baselius Clemis, Bishop K.G. Daniel, and Bishop of Central Kerala Diocese Dr. Thomas Samuel reached the home to pay their homage.

As a token of deference to K.M. Mathew all shops will be closed on both sides of K.K. Road, Good Shepherd Road, Shastri Road, Seematti Circle, Baker Junction and C.M.S. College, when the funeral procession passes through.

The Catholicos of the East Baselios Marthoma Didymus I and Catholicos Elect Metropolitan Paulose Mar Milithios will lead funeral services of K.M. Mathew, who led the Malankara Church bravely and boldly as a Working Committee Member and a Managing Committee Member during times of tempest and tumults.

Born January 2, 1917, Mathew, is the son of K.C. Mammen Mappilai, a pioneer of Malayalam journalism, and Kunjannamma.

Belonging to the Syrian Orthodox Church, Mathew was the leading light of the church which has a strength of more than 2.5 million. His contribution to the church activities was always looked upon by all.

Mathew, who was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third highest civilian honour in 1998, was one of the founding members of the Baselious College, Kottayam in 1964.
