Diocese of South-West America Elects The First Diocesan Council

HOUSTON: The Diocese of South-West America elected Fr. Thampan Varghese (Dallas, TX) – as the Diocesan Secretary. Fr. Dr. Joy Pyngolil (Hollywood, FL), Fr. Raju M. Daniel (Dallas, TX) , George Panicker (Chicago, IL), Charly Varghese (Houston, TX),Johnson Varghese (Austin, TX) and P.I. Joy (Atlanta, GA) will be the members of the newly constituted diocesan council. Philipose Philip (Houston, TX) was elected as the diocesan auditor.

The First Diocesan Assembly was held at St. Thomas Orthodox Cathedral, Houston on Friday, May 21, 2010 elected its new officers. The diocesan metropolitan Alexios Mar Eusebius presided over the meeting.

Dr. Amminikkutty Jeevan was the Chief Electoral Officer for the election procedures and Metropolitan Alexios Mar Eusebius declared the names of new Diocesan Council members.

Priest Trustee Fr. Dr. Johns Abraham Konattu led the devotional address. Fr. P.M. Cherian, Secretary to the Ad-hoc Committee presented the Annual Report for the year 2009 and Budget for the year 2010, which the Diocesan Assembly approved.

Jobby Abraham (Houston) representing the youth of the diocese presented the theme ‘Special Ministry to the Neo Diaspora’. He emphasized the importance to cater to the spiritual needs of the second and third generation Orthodox faithful, who have the language and cultural barriers to appreciate and enjoy services totally in Malayalam.

A special meeting on Catholicate Day Collections and celebrations was arranged at the end of the diocesan assembly meeting and Catholicos Elect Paulose Mar Milithios presided over the meeting. Secretary to the Holy Episcopal Synod Dr. Mathews Mar Severios, Priest Trustee Fr. Dr. Johns Abraham Konattu and Lay Trustee M.G. George Muthoot addressed the assembly members. The meeting mainly dealt on the importance of Catholicate day collections and celebrations.

Vicar of the hosting church Chor-Episcopos Geevarghese Aroopala welcomed the gathering.

Priests and diocesan assembly members from all parishes of the diocese attended the historic meeting of the diocese.
