Changes are Inevitable in Spiritual Leadership Too: Oommen Chandy

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Development of humanity during this Century is amazing. Conspicuous changes are visible in the society too. Therefore, spiritual leadership also needs to change according to the changed predicaments in humanity and society, said the Leader of opposition, Kerala Legislative Assembly, Oommen Chandy.

Oommen Chandy was delivering the inaugural address at the formal meeting organized by Malankara Church to welcome the newly consecrated Metropolitans at Kottakkattu Convention Center, Nalanchira, Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday, May 18, 2010.

“I think the newly consecrated Metropolitans are competent personalities to lead the Church through assimilating changes that the society demands. May their leadership be benevolent to the society and to the Church.” hoped the Leader of Opposition.

Catholicos Elect Paulose Mar Milithios Metropolitan presided over the meeting. Dr. Alexander Karackel introduced the new Metropolitans to the meeting.

“God has selected these Metropolitans to lead a life of blissful service to both God and human. Therefore, they have to undergo constant introspection and have to choose a deliberate effort of succumbing to the will of God. May God carefully protect these fathers, who have to lead the Church into the 21st Century,” wished the Catholicos Elect.

“We are living in a world full of conflicts. We can observe diverse views in the society as well as within Churches. However, spiritual leaders can outshine these differences. We look forward to the new Metropolitans with hope to act at such a level”, said M.A. Baby, Minister of Education, Kerala Cabinet. Religious communities have contributed immensely to the educational sector of the Kerala society. “May the new Metropolitans become catalysts to the change in society,” wished the Kerala Minister for Education.

K.M. Mani, leader of Kerala Congress said that the Malankara Church is an ancient Church and the new Metropolitans are the gift of God to the Malankara Church.

Bishop Susepakyam, Bishop Gladston, and Abbot of Varkala Madham Swami Prakashananda felicitated the newly consecrated Metropolitans.

Dr. Gabriel Mar Gregorios, Metropolitan of Thiruvananthapuram clad the Catholicos Elect with golden stuff and presented a memento to felicitate the future Pontiff on his Episcopal Silver Jubilee.

Dr. Youhanon Mar Demetrious Metropolitan made the response speech representing all the newly consecrated Metropolitans.
Metropolitan of Thiruvananthapuram Dr. Gabriel Mar Gregorios welcomed the gathering and Fr. Mathew Ninan marked the vote of thanks.
