KOTTAYAM: “India is symbol of the ocean of Gurus (Gurusaagaram) and all the dreams and hopes of the new Guru’s are to get accomplished from God almighty, said Fr. Dr. Jacob Kurien, the Vice-Principal, Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam.

He was delivering the sermon of blessings at the Metropolitan consecration at Mar Elia Cathedral, Kottayam on Wednesday, May 12, 2010. Fr. Jacob Kurien’s sermon was based on Revelation 1: 12-16.

In the midst of agonies St. John, who was exiled to Island Patmos, received divine revelations, and those revelations came down to us as the ‘Book of Revelations’ in the Bible. There is an imagery of Christ in Revelations, namely, seven gold lamps and seven stars and in the midst there is Christ wearing a gold robe. The lamps and stars are symbolizing episcopacy. Fr. Jacob Kurien exhorted the seven golden lamps of Malankara to shine gloriously and execute their services to the Church.

Lamps signify the service on earth, while stars indicate the services on high. A bishop has to serve the Church on earth and that service has to draw motivation and energy from the service at the plane of stars, namely, the service of prayer.

There is service of authority and authority of service for bishops. One bishop shall not lose himself totally to the service of mundane authority, rather shall pay prime attention to the authority of service, which paramounts in the administration of prayers and divine offices.

In the initial centuries of Christian growth, one can see several fathers, who ran away from the office of a Metropolitan. Today, people run after the office of Metropolitan. ‘Why were they running away from the bishop’s office’ is a valid question. They had their legitimate and compelling reasons. These reasons can guide us even today too, Fr. Jacob Kurien continued.

(The full form of Fr. Jacob Kurien’s sermon will be available in the Weekend Edition of Orthodox Herald in Malayalam, which will later be available in English too.)
