KOTTAYAM: The Catholicos of Malankara Baseilios Marthoma Didymos I declared that the Orthodox Church will institute ‘Karshaka Shreshta Award’. This award is part of the action plan to pay more emphasis on environmental protection, the bull from the Pontiff of Malankara explains.
Recent developments in Indian industrial sector make everyone proud. Industrial developments as well as the latest leap in IT sector have reduced the unemployment considerably. However, the agricultural sector is getting neglected and it is alarming. It will lead Kerala to famine, draught, and climatic changes, if agricultural land gets neglected and left barren or paddy fields get leveled for construction on a regular basis. Kerala at present is in a sad predicament for the South Indian State is depending its neighbors badly for its food supplies. It is a bare necessity to increase food production and the Catholicos is of conviction that the Church shall also pay higher attention thereupon. ‘God appointed humans at the Garden of Eden to till and keep it and this fundamental command of God has to be fulfilled’, says the bull.
Recently concluded Holy Episcopal Synod has decided to run parish level awareness programs, and encourage farmers to revamp the agricultural sector. The department of human empowerment will take necessary steps therefore. Every year three people will be honored at the parish, diocesan and Church level with the ‘Karshaka Shreshta Award’ and every parish shall execute action plans to encourage agriculture and farmers, announced the Catholicos.
June 5th is the International Environmental Day and therefore, parishes shall observe ‘Environment Day’ on Sunday, June 6th with special prayers, classes, and seminars. “Let us love the nature and the earth, which God created”, exhorted the Catholicose. All these ideas concerns and exhortations are made in the bull no. 140/2010 dated March 30, 2010.
