Muscat MGOC Youth Movement releases attractive 2010 Calendar

MUSCAT: Flush with the successful organizing of the 4th Gulf Orthodox Youth Conference (GOYC) in December 2009, the Mar Gregorios Orthodox Christian Youth Movement (MGOCYM), youth wing of the Muscat Mar Gregorios Orthodox Church, has come out with an attractive calendar for 2010.

The six-page glossy Gregorian calendar is an improvement over the last year in design and layout. If the 2009 calendar pictured patron saints, Malankara Metropolitan, Catholicos designate and also departed Malankara metropolitans, the 2010 calendar however have paintings from the life and times of Lord Jesus and his journey in this Earth.

March and April being the months of the Great Lent, the calendar pictures Jesus bearing the cross being mocked and beaten before being sentenced and crucified (picture above).

Each month also details the important dates of the Malankara Sabha Calendar. For the month of March mention is made of the Catholicate Day (March 21), Vachanippu or Annunciation of St Mary on March 25, 40th Day of Lent and remembrance of Muscat church vicar late Fr K M Varghese (1981-85) on March 26 and Palm Sunday on March 28th.

April mentions important dates like Pessaha (Last Supper, April 1), Good Friday (Hasa Velli) on 2nd, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday on 4th , remembrance of HG Kuriakose Mar Gregorios (Pampady Thirumeni) on April 11 and of HG Geevarghese Mar Philexinos (Puthencavu Thirumeni).

The calendar opens with a picture of Mother Mary carrying child Jesus in her palms for the month of January and February. The calendar with its dark background is easy and convenient and to read. Weekly holidays on Fridays (in the Gulf region) has been highlighted in red colour. The head mast has the logo mentioning the theme of the GOYC, Boundaries and Beyond while the top right corner has the logo of the Orthodox Christian Youth Movement of the East with its credo on Worship, Service and Study.

The calendar has been sponsored by church members individually for each month and also by private companies in Oman.

The main sponsor is by the Geevarghese Yohannan group of institutions which runs the Mar Gregorios Memorial Residential Public School in Kottarakkara and the Mar Gregorios Memorial Central Public School, Akkulam, Thiruvananthapuram.

The calendar was released by Fr James Geevarghese as Vicar and President of MGOC and is available for private circulation only.

The MGOCYM also held free medical camp and health awareness seminar, devotional concert, blood donation camps in the run up to the Gulf Orthodox Youth Conference.
