ABU DHABI: St. George Orthodox Cathedral Martha Mariam Samajam of Abu Dhabi organized a unique event, may be the first of its kind in the Malankara Church, called ” PETHURTHA FEST” on Friday February 12, 2010.

As part of the “Great Lent” the old generation of Syrian Christians washed all vessels used to prepare Non – Vegetarian foods and kept untouched till Easter before the lent begins. “PETHURTHA FEST” of the Abu Dhabi Cathedral was a reproduction of old tradition of the Orthodox Syrian Christians of Kerala that they followed for centuries, welcoming the Lenten days. This event will give a new insight especially to the younger generation about a very old tradition in the Church.

Special Kerala dishes like Bread and Chicken curry, Tapioca and Fish curry, Cutlets and so many items were arranged in various stalls.

Cathedral Vicar Fr. Johnson Daniel inaugurated the fest by giving the first coupon to Itty Panikar , Hon. Trustee of Parish. A.J Joykutty, Secretary of parish, cut the ribbon to mark the beginning of the fest.

The income from the fest is separated for the charity works of Cathedral Martha Mariam Samajam. Under the leadership of Annie Mathew, Secretary of MMS, the members and families worked hard for the fest to make this a big event.
