Parliament of the World Religions Concluded at Melbourne

MELBOURNE: People around the world made their way to Melbourne, Australia, for the Parliament of the World Religions held on December 2-9, 2009. Held only every five years, the Parliament is the largest global gathering of people from the diverse religious traditions around the world. Over 6000 delegates attended the Parliament-2009 representing various religions.

This year’s theme, Make a World of Difference, included over 1,000 speakers, including the Dalai Lama; Dr. Hans Kung, German Catholic theologian; Uncle Bob Randall, Aboriginal (Yankunytjatjara) Elder; Sri Sri Ravi Shankar; and Rabbi David Saperstein of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism.

The highlights of the Parliament were worship opportunities, special music, and workshops on seven sub themes:
Healing the Earth with Care and Concern
Indigenous People
Overcoming Poverty in an Unequal World
Securing Food and Water for All People
Building Peace in the Pursuit of Justice
Creating Social Cohesion in Village and City
Sharing Wisdom in the Search for Inner Peace

Rev. M.S.Skariah Ramban (Delhi) and Fr.K.Y. Chacko represented Indian Orthodox Church at the Parliament.
