NCC USA 2009 General Assembly Concluded in Minnesota by November 13

MINNESOTA: The 2009 General Assembly of the National Council of Churches and Church World Service, was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota from November 10 -13, 2009.

Delegates from Malankara Orthodox Church to the NCC General Assembly were Zachariah Mar Nicholovos (Assistant Metropolitan of the Northeast American Diocese), Alexios Mar Eusebius (Metropolitan of the Southwest American Diocese), Fr. Dr. P. C. Thomas, Susan Varghese and Asha Thomas.

In its three-day meeting, the General Assembly voted the Apostolic Catholic Church into membership, adopted a resolution calling for nuclear disarmament, and issued messages regarding the tragedy at Fort Hood, cited on the urgency of health care reform, and urging that money saved by international reductions in military spending be used to reduce infant mortality and extreme poverty. The General Assembly also issued a message of appreciation regarding the recent visit of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to the U.S.

Rev. Dr. Margaret Aymer, Associate Professor of New Testament and Chair of Biblical Studies at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, was the keynote speaker. He spoke on I Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Rejoice Always, Pray without ceasing, Give thanks in all circumstances,”

Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, greeted the Assembly on its second day of business.

Rev. Dr. Amjad –Ali, Professor for Justice and Christian Community and Director of Islamic Studies at Luther Seminary in Minneapolis led in Bible study.

The Assembly also called upon churches and governments to take additional steps toward worldwide justice and peace.
Worship services were conducted in the traditions of the Assembly’s Methodist and Orthodox churches. The young adult participants had a New Fire event.

The NCC is the ecumenical voice of America’s Protestant, Orthodox, Anglican, historic African American and traditional peace churches. 35 member churches have 45 million faithful in 100,000 congregations in all 50 states.
