Fr. John Behr: Chief Guest at Nagpur Seminary Convocation

NAGPUR: Fr. John Behr, Dean of St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in NY will be the chief guest at the convocation ceremony of St. Thomas Orthodox Seminary, Nagpur. The convocation will be held on October 7, 2009.
Fr. John visited Kerala on Sept 30 to know more on the ancient heritage of the Malankara Orthodox Church. He also had visited the Catholicose at his residence at Devalokam. Fr. John had a special meeting with the faculty of the Old Seminary, Kottayam, to explore on more cooperation between St. Vladimir’s Seminary and the Malankara Orthodox Seminaries in India. They also discussed on republishing the Indian version of the books already published by Vladimir Seminary.
Fr. John reached Nagpur Seminary on October 5 after his visit in Kerala. After attending the alumni meeting and the convocation ceremony, he will give lectures on different topics in the seminary. Fr. John Behr will leave Nagpur on October 11.
A Brief note on Fr. John Behr:
Fr John Behr teaches courses in patristics, dogmatics and scriptural exegesis in St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, Yonkers, New York. After completing a degree in Philosophy in London in 1987, he spent a year studying in Greece. He finished an M.Phil. in Eastern Christian Studies at Oxford University, under Bishop Kallistos Ware, who subsequently supervised his doctoral work, which was examined by Andrew Louth and Rowan Williams, now Archbishop of Canterbury. On finishing his studies, he was invited to be a Visiting Lecturer at St Vladimir’s Seminary in 1993, where he has been a permanent faculty member since 1995, tenured in 2000, and ordained in 2001. He is currently the editor of St Vladimir’s Theological Quarterly.
Fr. John Behr authored many Books in the field of theology. The Mystery of Christ: Life in Death, The Nicene Faith, vol. 2 of The Formation of Christian Theology, Abba: The Tradition of Orthodoxy in the West: Festschrift for Bishop Kallistos Ware, The Way to Nicaea, vol. 1 of The Formation of Christian Theology, Asceticism and Anthropology in Irenaeus and Clement and St Irenaeus of Lyons: On the Apostolic Preaching are some of his books well accepted among the theological students.
