AHMADABAD: Diocese of Ahmadabad, the 26th diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Church was inaugurated in Ahmedabad on Saturday October 4, 2009 at St. Mary’s School, Naroda. The venue was declared as Mar Theophilos Nagar.
The inaugural ceremony began with Holy Qurbana in the morning. Dr. Mathews Mar Severios, the secretary of the Holy Episcopal Synod inaugurated the new diocese in a public meeting held at Mar Theophilos Nargar. Metropolitan of the diocese of Bombay, Geevarghese Mar Coorilos presided over the function.
Bishop Stanslavos Fernandas of Roman catholic Church, Bishop Vinod Kumar Malavya of CSI Church, Bishop Abraham Mar Paulose of Marthoma Church, Bishop Dr. E. P. Samuel of Methodist Church, Fr. Dr. Johns Abraham, the Priest Trustee and Gujarath Rtd. Additional Chief Secretary C. K. Koshy IAS spoke on the occasion.
The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church traces its origins to St Thomas, one of Christ’s 12 apostles who came to India in 52 AD.
By the inauguration of the new diocese, diocese of Ahmadabad became the sixth diocese of outside Kerala – with in India. Madras, Bangalore, Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta are the other outside Kerala dioceses.
