Collaborative Initiative of ICON to Promote ‘GiveSight’ Program Launched

PHILADELPHIA: In a brief function held after the Holy Qurbana on Sunday, September 6, 2009 at St. Thomas Indian Orthodox Church in Philadelphia, Metropolitan Geevarghese Mar Ivanios of Kottayam Diocese inaugurated ICON’s collaborative initiative to promote the ‘GiveSight’ program by accepting a donation from Regi Mathai, a member of St. Thomas Church.

ICON Charities Inc. is teaming up with St. Gregorios Medical Mission (SGMM) Hospital in Parumala to promote the ‘GiveSight’ Program of the hospital

In his address, Metropolitan mentioned that it costs more than Rs.10000.00 in many hospitals to perform the cataract surgery. However, Parumala hospital is doing a public service by offering this procedure for the less privileged at a reduced cost of Rs. 1500.00 (approximately US $ 35.00). Metropolitan commended the ‘GiveSight’ program as a good service offered by SGMM hospital.

Fr. M. K. Kuriakose (Vicar of St. Thomas Indian Orthodox Church) also expressed his support for this initiative. Oommen Kappil, one of the moderators of ICON spoke on the occasion.

ICON, a network of the largest discussion forum of Indian Orthodox Church members, has done several charitable projects during the past several years. The first one was done about eight years ago, in 2001. Around Rs. 200,000.00 was gifted to a poor girl from Manarcadu, who was deaf and mute, but passed Technical Higher Secondary examination with first rank and that function was inaugurated by Metropolitan Mar Ivanios in a small function held at Kottayam Diocesan office.
