YACHARAM: St. Gregorios Balagram in Yacharam, the prominent charitable center of Malankara Orthodox Church will Celebrate its Silver Jubilee on 21 February 2010. Balagram is widely known for its exemplary work among the poor and the downtrodden. The name Yacharam Balagram itself is a land mark in the history of Malankara Orthodox Church’s humanitarian activity outside Kerala.
Started in 1985 with 5 children headed by Metropolitan Mar Osthathios, under the wings of the Mission Board of Malankara Orthodox Church, Balagram now has over 100 children in the age group of 3 to 18. In the last two and a half decades, many older children had completed their education and left Balagram gainfully employed. They include an engineer, teachers, optometrist, vision technicians, opticians etc. Thus Balagram made a difference in the lives of its inmates whose parents were afflicted by leprosy.
The eye hospital started in 2001 with the assistance of world renowned LV Prasad Eye Institute is giving hope for the poor nearby with eye problems . Over 5000 cataract surgeries have been done, mostly free of cost or with less money.
An Old Age Home is also started in 2008.
The children at present have no study hall or library. Balagram intends to construct both these before the silver jubilee.
