The body of Augen Mar Dionysius Metropolitan, the head of the Idukki diocese of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, who was killed in a car accident on Wednesday, was laid to rest at a specially constructed crypt at the chapel of the Vallikkattu Dayara, near Vakathanam, where he was the abbot for over a decade. The body of Mar Dionysius was taken to the Dayara from the headquarters of the Orthodox Church at Devalokam on Thursday night. Throughout the night and on Friday morning, there was a steady flow of the flock to have a last glimpse of their departed spiritual leader who had raised the Dayara to one of the major Christian pilgrim centres in the Central Travancore area.

Among those who paid their last respects were Ministers Mathew T. Thomas, T. M. Thomas Isaac, T. U. Kuruvilla; Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy; Deputy Speaker Jos Baby; MLAs K.M. Mani, P.J. Joseph, C.F. Thomas, Mons Joseph and V. N. Vasavan and Bishops and priests from the Orthodox Church and sister churches and members of the laity.

The last leg of the final journey began after a holy mass led by Metropolitan Zacharias Mar Theophilos, head of the Malabar diocese of Orthodox Church. Catholicos Baselius Mar Thoma Didmos I was the celebrant of the final rites with the other Metropolitans of the church acting as concelebrants.

The rites, which began by 11.30 a.m. lasted till 1 p.m. The funeral was followed by a condolence meeting on the Dayara premises. Shops and offices in Vakathanam remained closed till noon as a mark of respect to the departed spiritual leader.
