Memorial Feast Of Mar Thoma Dionysius

PATHANAPURAM:The 32nd Memorial Festival of Mar Thoma Dionysius who was the founder of Pathanapuram Tabore Monastic order and Metropolitan of Malankara Orthodox Diocese was celebrated in various places.
The Thoma Mar Dionysius all Malankara Sunday School Competitions were held on November 11th at Pathanapuram St. Stephan´s Mount Dayara Chapel, where the Metropolitan is buried. The flag hoisting of the Memorial Festival was done on November 29th, after the Holy Qurbana.
Mar Thoma Dionysius was born on 8th June 1887 at Mavelikara as the son of Kallumpurathu Mathew and Aleyamma. After his education at Kottayam CMS College he left for England in 1937. He had higher studies in theology at the famous Oxford University. In 1912 he had been ordained as a Deacon at Chengannur Old Syrian Church by the renowned Vattasseril Mar Dionysius. In 1934 Geevarghese II made him a priest. Rev. Thomas became a Ramban in 1937 and Metropolitan on 6th May 1940. He took up the charge of the Niranam Diocese in 1944.
The contribution that Mar Thoma Dionysius had made to the growth of the monastic system in the Orthodox Church was great. He strengthened the educational field through the foundation of High school, Training and Arts Colleges etc. He represented the Malankara Orthodox church in many international conferences. His successors were Thomas Mar Themothios, Zachariah Mar Dionysius, Job Mar Philoxenos and Dr. Yakob Mar Irenaios.
Mar Thoma Dionysius deceased on 3rd December 1972. His 32nd memorial meeting was held at 2 p.m on 30th November 2004. The meeting presided over by the Catholicos Elect Thomas Mar Themothios and was inaugurated by the Kerala Food Minister Sri.Adoor Prakash.
The Memorial lecture was delivered by Dr. Cyriac Thomas, the former Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University. The Minister gave away the prizes to the winners of the Sunday School competitions. Fr. Johnny K. Joy (Adoor) and Fr. Ninan George (Pandalam) spoke on the occasion.
